What we knew yesterday is not enough to carry us today. Life is changing. Who we were yesterday is not the same person we are today. Especially, if now your life includes a chronic condition. By the very nature of a chronic condition, today will be different than yesterday and tomorrow. Living successfully with a chronic condition requires learning. Learning about yourself and your condition. Perhaps you have heard the expression.. ”Knowledge is power.” The more you are aware of your body, how you process your thoughts and feelings, what triggers you to respond the way you do, how to care for yourself, and what keeps you from doing what you know is healthy for you, the healthier you will be. You will be empowered. All these things require education. You are your best teacher. Counseling becomes the guiding process. Without educating yourself, you remain a slave to those things that are holding you back. Your condition will hold you back from experiencing the fullness of life.

Medical and mental health professionals understand that in order to practice evidence based care we have to stay educated. This is why most states require continuing education in order to renew a professional license. Certainly any advanced certification requires continuing education as they recognize part of being a professional in your field there is a commitment to excellence and pursuit of knowledge. We cannot practice quality medical care based on 30 year old knowledge. We understand so much more now about medical conditions due to the advancements in research. If we do not practice based on knowledge then we practice on personal judgments and bias. This is can be damaging, both physically and emotionally. So, just like the child above, we have to keep going back to gain new knowledge.

Rays of Hope is committed to both the pursuit and delivery of education.
